about

Picture of the Hostage Holding Today's Newspaper is Andrew Broder's 2nd official offering of all-instrumental music. A beat tape. After years of using loop pedals to augment his guitar, sometime around 2010 Broder realized that with a loop pedal, a turntable, records, a drum machine, synths and other miscellaneous junk, he could create improvised beats in a stream-of-conciousness method, all played by hand and impossible to do twice. He began to play gigs with this setup around his native Twin Cities and also began stockpiling long, improvised sessions of this work for the following few years.
Picture of the Hostage captures the best moments from these intense and solitary basement jams, spliced together to create a head-nodding, psychedelic and moody journey encompassing dusty 90's boom bap, weird synth funk, primitive synth drones, stumbling house beats and much more. It was improvised, edited and produced entirely by Broder and mastered by sonic wizard Odd Nosdam (Anticon/ Leaving). This box set, brought to you by the dedicated weirdos at Brian Records is spread over 5 cassette tapes, each 10 minutes per side. The perfect amount of time to inhale, sit back, enjoy a jam, flip the tape, take another hit, and so on....

Limited cassette edition contains 5 tapes/ 10 sides, plus a bonus 6-minute mini CD-R and photo booklet w/ notes (106 minutes of music).

This digital edition contains 3 tapes/ 6 sides (60 minutes of music).
